Collections

The only institution in French-speaking Switzerland entirely dedicated to design, mudac has several collections: design, glass art, contemporary jewellery, graphic arts and ceramic.

Reflecting the trends in contemporary design, these five collections bear witness to the profound upheavals that design has experienced in the 20th and 21st centuries. Relevance, originality, ingenuity and innovation are the selection criteria. Aware of the constant evolution of the various fields of design, the museum intends to include these changes in its collections and is developing selection criteria for acquisitions that go beyond simple material and technical indications.

Alongside the great names in design, mudac is keen to collect the works of young designers in order to showcase their often innovative approach. Intervening at the start of a career and/or the development of a project means accompanying a designer in his or her approach. Several graduation projects have thus entered the collections.

In this spirit, it was decided in 2015 that, as far as possible, acquisitions should be accompanied by prototypes and sketches that bear witness to prospective thinking on the object, function and material.

In 2022 the collections are going to house in the repositories at Plateforme 10.

Acquisition policy

The museum’s move to Plateforme 10 represents an opportunity to redefine the acquisition policy for works and the meaning of mudac’s collections.
