Hot Tools: Students at the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne experimented and conceived new tools for handling glass, a fascinating albeit demanding material, with French designer Ronan Bouroullec and Swiss glass-blower Matteo Gonet. Their workshop came up with a series of highly original proposals, comprising moulds of wood, glass powder, copper, carbon fibre and even leather.
All Ambic is an on-going vase series by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, initiated by the invitation by Adriano Berengo, to participate in the glass biennial Glasstress in Venice. The title is a reference to the retort and the alambic stills linked to sorcery, while the vase bulges and beaks have been transformed into animal and plant shapes, into the beaks and crests of birds. and into shimmering corals. They put us in mind of the magic nature of glass-blowing, and of this material’s potential for transformation.
